Tuol Sleng War Crimes Museum

polpot.jpg (12713 bytes)About the school

The school walls of Tuol Sleng still shudder with gasps and cries. But it is the soft voice of tourists and not prisoners that are stunned by the horrors that once took place here. It is preserved today exactly as it was when the inhuman monsters calling themselves Khmer Rouge fled Phnom Penh. Inside the seemingly innocent walls, 16,000 Cambodians were systematically photographed, interrogated, tortured and killed during mass murderer Pol Pot's regime.

Note:

On April 15, 1998, Pol Pot died in his sleep in a jungle encampment near Cambodia's border with Thailand. The dictator's natural death robbed the people of hopes for justice through an international trial.

INTRODUCTION TO THE MUSEUM OF CRIME

In the past, << Tuol Sleng>> Museum was one of the secondary schools in the capital, called <> High. School.

After April 17, 1975 Pol Pot clique had transformed it into a prison called <> (security office 21) which was the biggest Kampuchea Democratic. It was surrounded with a double wall of corrugates iron, surmounted with dense barbed wires. The classrooms on the ground and first floors were pierced and divided into individual cells, whereas the ones on the second floor used for mass detention.

Several thousands of victims (peasants, workers, technicians, engineers, doctors, teachers, students, Buddhist monks, ministers, Pol Pot cadres, soldiers of all ranks, the Cambodian Diplomatic Corps, foreigners, etc…) were imprisoned and exterminated with their wives and children.

There are a lot of evidences here proving the atrocities of Pol Pot clique: cells, instruments of torture, dossiers and documents, list of prisoners’ names, photos of victims, their clothes and their belongings.
