BOOK REVIEW Adventure Guide to Southeast Florida

Adventure Guide to Southeast Florida

Including Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Boca Raton, Palm Beach and Vero Beach

Authors: Sharon Lloyd Spence and Warren Lieb

Publisher: Hunter Publishing Inc., Edison, NJ, 1998

Rating: *****

This one's a keeper. A 246-page, soft-cover booklet that fits easily into your handbag, packsack or any large pocket, Adventure Guide to Southeast Florida should be your constant companion for exploring this surprising state.

The book is clean, user-friendly and simple to follow. It's organized by geographic areas, which are identified easily by built-in tabs on the outside page edges. Except for an insert of color photos in its centerfold, the book contains only black-and-white maps, graphics and photos. This system keeps the pages uncluttered and distraction-free, so you can zero in on exactly what you want when you want it.

Each section on an area follows a formula which guides you right to your particular interests. It begins by describing how to get there, how to get around when you're there – be it on foot, wheels, horseback, water or air. Each section also lists adventures for those wanting to try something different. Sometimes, just watching the locals is an adventure. Be sure to check out Vesna Galesic, a 40-something Miami Beach rollerblade queen, who still skates till midnight with the local kids.

The book provides an excellent overview of what to see and do, where to stay and places to eat, complete with price ranges and contact information. And the introductory chapter covers a spectrum of educational topics such as Florida's history, its flora and fauna and its geography and climate.

A nice touch is the interviews with real people: Reed Robbins, a Miami skydiving instructor; Rusty Harr, preserve curator at Lion Country Safari in West Palm Beach; Mark Chapdelain, president of Stuart-based Balloons Over Florida...and others. The book is also full of great tips – on safety, sun screening, rollerblading, and protecting sea turtles.

Whatever your interest, this practical guide helps you plan ahead and avoid the unexpected.
